The Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce and its Board of Directors acknowledge the recent allegations reported regarding César Chávez. These accounts are deeply concerning, particularly for survivors of sexual assault and for those in our community who have been shaped by the longstanding efforts to uplift farmworkers and underrepresented laborers. We strongly condemn the alleged horrific abuses against women attributed to Chávez and affirm that such actions represent a profound betrayal of the values that Latino leaders have championed for generations.
Our Chamber’s mission has always been to promote economic development, education, and opportunity for New Mexico’s Hispanic and small‑business communities. That mission is rooted in the belief that every individual deserves safety, dignity, and the ability to thrive. We recognize that the movement for farmworker rights — like all movements that seek fairness and opportunity — has been built by many hands, families, and communities working together over generations.
We stand with survivors of sexual assault, especially young women, whose courage in coming forward is essential to creating safer workplaces and communities. Their voices matter, and they deserve to be heard with respect and compassion.
At the same time, we honor the broader legacy of those who have fought to improve conditions for workers who have historically lacked representation and protection. The progress achieved through their collective efforts remains important to the economic and social well‑being of New Mexico.
As an organization committed to strengthening our community, we remain focused on fostering environments — in business, education, and civic life — where all people are protected, valued, and empowered. Our work continues with a commitment to integrity, inclusivity, and the well‑being of the communities we serve.
Therefore, we recommend the removal of the name César Chávez from all public places throughout New Mexico.
Business Person of The Year
Paul Chavez, a lifelong Albuquerque native, grew up in the family business — Apache Construction/Valley Fence — starting work as soon as he could reach the tool bench. A graduate of Sandia View Academy, he credits the school with helping guide him away from negative paths and toward purpose. After attending UNM, Paul officially committed to the family company, where he has proudly served the South Valley community and maintained strong involvement with the Hispano Chamber of Commerce. Married to his wife Angela since 1976, with children and grandchildren he adores, Paul is now transitioning the business to the next generation — including his son Tyler — and looking forward to retirement filled with travel, family time, and the occasional improved golf swing.
Tyler Chavez
is a proud graduate of Southwestern Adventist University, earning his bachelor’s degree in 2011 and MBA in 2013, the same year he married his wife, Taylor. Together they are raising their son, Henry, and hoping to grow their family. Tyler joined Valley Fence full-time in 2013 and became General Manager in 2018, honored to continue the legacy established by his father, Paul, as a third-generation leader in the making. He has also been an active member of the Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce executive board since 2021 and remains committed to supporting the chamber and the community it serves.
